Reprise

The other day I was thinking about my summer and how mild the weather was, and I remembered my last post. So much has happened in a year and yet so much remains the same. As I said, the weather was mild and enjoyable (though some are complaining that it has not been hot enough). We still haven't taken much advantage of that bike  path, although the smallest member of our family did  have a broken leg for the first half of the summer! I have taken delight in God's smallest creatures, snails in CA, slugs in MI, caterpillers in IL. I don't know why I like them so much, but next to fungi, they are the things I like to look for. And now for the changes; we had one son graduate from 8th grade and one from college. The college son was not home for the summer or available to vacation with us. The year has brought many doctor visits with the young daughter, allergist, optometrist, neurologist, MRI, ER ,orthopeadic surgeon, and physical therapist. The diagnoses, migraine headaches and a broken leg. She is almost completely well at this point and we are grateful that the healing has been so complete and the disability temporary. It did give us all a window into families who cope with these things for a lifetime. We have seen people around us deal with sudden death of a spouse, we have seen people lose jobs and others cope with other types of loss. We know that through all the difficult times, God is still good and He is still in control of our circumstances. That gives us hope for joy on this earth and certainty of eternity with Him.

A Summer to Remember

I cannot recall a summer in my lifetime with such perfect weather. We have had upper 70's-mid 80's with low humidity most of the first half of this summer. We have had enough rain, it just comes when we're sleeping. We haven't even hauled our air conditioners out of the garage yet!  Of course, we  could be doing more outside than we have, gardening or painting or just sitting and enjoying. We did ride bikes last Friday, back and forth to the baseball field. Our town has a big Little League program and it was All-Star Weekend.  I love to go even when my kids are not involved. It reminds me of the small town  in Iowa where my Dad grew up. They have a raffle and a hot dog vendor and you see people whose kids were on a team with your kid years ago  and you greet each other warmly. We have had a child in baseball for 16 years and we will miss it when our last boy is done. This year he was an umpire as well as a player, but I don't know if he will do that again next year. Our girls have no interest in baseball or softball, lest you think us sexist. Back to bicycling, we now have everybody on a bike without training wheels, so maybe we will try a ride with as many as we can get to go. We live by a great bike path so we really have no excuse. If anyone is reading this, I hope that your summer is enjoyable also. Look for God's smaller creatures and marvel at his creativity.

Endings

I'm not good at endings, not so much  at begininngs either. I'm more of a middle person. I hate the end of the school year; not because I don't want to spend time with my children, but because I don't like them to grow up so fast. My baby is finishing second grade, which for me signifies the end of Early Childhood. I know they learn cursive writng in second grade now, so she already knows some of what I learned in third, but third grade just seems old. This year has been full of milestones in our family and I wouldn't trade them, but it still makes me sad. I told one of my close friends how I feel and she told me about a family who lost their 4-year-old in her sleep. They didn't think she was that sick. Now that puts things in perspective. No matter how self-sufficient my kids get, at least I have them. I do feel richly blessed to have the family that I do.

In Just Spring

Happy Spring to you!  The sun is shining today. It only showed up about 3 times here all winter. That makes babylover a crabby girl.  Easter coming so early is making me a bit nervous, but I'm sure a trip to the grocery store will help with that feeling. Of course, I would rather not wear my black pants that I wear every Sunday to church on Easter, but that may be what happens. Number A ,as my son would say, it will be too cold and possibly snowy to wear Spring clothes, and number B, I am not happy with my current weight so I don't want to buy new clothes. This is a situation in which I have found myself many times before. Easter is not supposed to be about new clothes anyway. I remember that lesson from when I was 5.  So, in closing, don't let Russell Stover, Fannie May and Brach's dominate your celebration, swimsuit season is just around the corner!

Three Teenagers

We have three teenagers in the family again, our "little guy" turned 13 yesterday.  I know it's cliched but, I can't believe how fast those years went. My two oldest now sit and smoke pipes together at college instead of playing with Ninja Turtle action figures. My older daughter will be 16 in two weeks and has a date for the dance. And the baby is 7 1/2! Yikes, I must be getting old. That must be why I have so much gray hair.  Anyway, we have had a good time with them as children and we look forward to many more fun times as they mature. Today we are going to take down our Christmas tree and send out greetings to people whose names begin with S-Z. (I got bogged down when I ran out of supplies.) Then we are going to try to empty Mom's condo in preparation for selling it! The biggest feat of all will be staying awake and alert to go out with friends to see a band at 11:00. Big fun!
